June.16,1775, Colonel William Prescott ordered 1,200 militiamen to set up fortifications at Bunker Hill and nearby Breed's Hill, across the harbor from Boston.The British arrived at the bottom of Breed's Hill and then the Americans charged up the hill. The Americans were very low on ammunition so Prescott said to his men ''Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes.'' The Americans shot first, starting the war. The British retreated. They charged at the Americans a couple more times then the Americans ran out of all of their supplies and ammunition, so they had to withdraw from the war. THE BRITISH WON THE BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL, but more than 1,000 men dead and wounded. A British soldier wrote in his diary, ''A dear bought victory, another such would have ruined us.'' They found out that beating the Americans would not be easy or quick. But event though the Americans didn't win, they were recongnized.
AFRICAN AMERICANS JOINS THE WAR
The Americans needed more soldiers, so as many as 5,000 African Americans joined in the war. Lemuel Hayes and Peter Salem are African Americans who fought in the war. They were two important people in the war. They fought for the same reasons as the Americans, they believed in the patriots cause and needed money. They also fought for their fought for their freedom.
